The "Rose Island" On 22 June 1968, a new nation was proclaimed in the Adriatic Sea just outside the Italian territorial waters not far from Rimini. An engineer had built a platform there a few years earlier. But the declaration of independence took most by surprise. Shortly afterwards, Italian authorties seized the structure and put an end to the micronation. Read more about the short-lived republic.
